Verne was the 2nd Big 33 son we hosted. In 35 years we hosted 45 players and Verne was at the top. As new players joined our family, each had a high bar to reach the standards Verne left with us, His Big 33 dad passed 2 years ago but we have always been proud of his accomplishments not just as a football player but what he has committed to his family and community.-

Mr. Forte was an amazing teacher and coach and as a student and athlete at MJHS provided many of my fondest memories of those years. As a transfer in the middle of the school year and taking my first gym class during basketball season, I managed to steal the ball from Frankie Calcagno (a future star at Gateway). Mr. Forte immediately called out”Luther, you’re on the basketball team so be at practice tonight! Great memories of track season and “ Men in Silver” too. Amazing to hear of his heroics during the war; he was so unassuming. They don’t make them like that any more and I’m blessed to have known him.

Jane, as you may remember, Larry and I grew up together. Grade school and high school in Crafton. then IUP together. We lived in the same neighborhood, played little league baseball and football together. I have often thought of him, and could kick myself for not making contact when I was in Pittsburgh on a coaching trip. You have my deepest sincerity and love.

Coach Murphy was my 9th-grade Civics teacher nearly 40 years ago. I enjoyed his class and teaching style very much and even remember a specific lesson he conducted on the stock market. As a player on Gateway’s freshman basketball team, how I looked forward to suiting up for him on the varsity! Alas, my dad and I moved to Knoxville, TN, before the start of my sophomore year, dashing that dream. Nonetheless, I haven’t forgotten Coach Murphy and only discovered this recognition when researching my “educational history” for a graduate class. Congratulations, Coach! My time with you was brief, but you left an impression!

My son loved playing for you Mr Guzzo. You have all the qualities a great Coach needs, honesty, character, and a spirit that kids know and trust. Unfortunately for some kids they do not have the opportunity to be Coached by such a man of character as yourself. You deserve every accolade.

There’s an oversight in your list of starters - Robert Wiesemann was a valuable member of the varsity team in 1965-1966. He wrestled in the 154lb weight class with a record of 5-1-1. He is pictured in the back row, 5th from right.

Doug,
Thank you very much for the kind words, especially about my father. He was a wonderful gentleman, administration, and above all, father. Everyone should be so fortunate.
